Centre Has Apprised Mehbooba on Returning Two Power Projects: Rajnath

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday stated that the Centre has apprised Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti regarding the process of returning two power projects to the state government.

Speaking to reporters, Rajnath Singh said that discussions have already taken place with the state leadership and that the Centre is considering the matter within the framework of existing laws and policies. He clarified that the decision involves technical, legal, and financial aspects that require careful evaluation before any final move is made.

The issue of transferring power projects back to Jammu and Kashmir has been a long-standing demand of the state government, with Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti repeatedly raising concerns over revenue generation and energy self-sufficiency. The state has argued that ownership of power projects would significantly improve its financial position and reduce dependence on central assistance.

Rajnath Singh emphasized that the Centre remains committed to cooperative federalism and constructive dialogue with the state government. He noted that power development is a crucial sector for Jammu and Kashmir and assured that the Centre is sensitive to the aspirations of the people.

Sources indicated that the talks primarily revolve around two major hydroelectric power projects currently under central control. Any decision, officials said, would take into account national interest, existing agreements, and the long-term development needs of the region.

The statement from the Home Minister has raised expectations within political circles in Jammu and Kashmir, where the return of the power projects is seen as a significant step toward economic empowerment and greater administrative autonomy.
