Police on Thursday said it arrested a “notorious fraudster” who had duped a KAS officer of Rs 3.5 lakh.
A police statement said the accused Danish Bashir Lanker of Rangreth–Wayoosa had fraudulently claimed to be senior manager of a company before government officials and had “very cunningly” developed friendly relations with them.
The accused weaved a conspiracy by pleading before the victim (the KAS officer) to accompany him to New Delhi for inauguration of his optical fiber unit, the statement said. “He (the accused) made him (the KAS official) falsely believe that he is being honoured by the accused. Accused also managed to secure Adhaar Card details from the victim on pretext of booking air tickets and hotel accommodation for him,” it said. “The information was used by the accused for drafting stamp papers on which certain undertakings were typed. Besides, after engaging the officer in a friendly discussion the accused extracted from him his mode of making banking transactions.”
Upon reaching Delhi, on pretext of taking the victim for inauguration of his nonexistent unit, the accused took him to a prefixed destination, where three more persons, part of the conspiracy, were waiting for them, said the statement.
“The victim was caught hold off by the accused and tied with rope and under a threat to life managed to acquire his MPay account and password details. His phone was snatched and misleading text messages were made by accused from the victim’s phone to his phone after siphoning Rs 3.5 lakh from victim’s account which was transferred to the account of accused,” the statement said. “In the text messages, information like thanking for money and getting an assurance for balance of Rs 46.50 lakh was shared to create false impression about exchange of money. The victim was made to sign fraudulently drafted affidavits and was warned of dire-consequences in case of approaching Police.”
The victim somehow was let off and on reaching Srinagar he approached police authorities and after proper verification, a case was registered at PS Sadder, said the statement, adding investigation was done under supervision of the SSP Srinagar and eventually the accused was arrested.
