SRINAGAR: Police foiled the proposed civil secretariat march of Kashmir Traders & Manufacturers Association against the implementation of Goods & Services Tax (GST) on Saturday by arresting several of its top leaders and other members.
Chairman of the association, Mohammad Yaseen Khan, told Kashmir Reader that police used force against its members that resulted in injuries to two of them. One among them, he said, had severe injuries. Police lodged the arrested members at police station Kothibagh and released them later in the day.
Earlier, the association assembled and held protest demonstrations at press colony and near clock tower in Lal chowk, shouting slogans against the government to oppose the new tax regime in its current form.
“We don’t endorse ‘one tax one law’ order of the government. We will oppose every move where our fiscal powers are being handed over to New Delhi. With current behaviour of government, it seems something fishy is cooking,” Khan said.
He said that business community is also in touch with trade bodies across the Pir Panjal to launch a massive agitation if government fails to amend the current GST act.
Pertinently, the business community of Kashmir valley is also observing a complete shutdown against the implementation of GST in J&K. The shutdown was called by several business bodies including Kashmir Economic Alliance of Kashmir.
