Police crack theft cases in Downtown


Police on Friday claimed to have busted two gangs of thieves here by arresting four persons and recovering stolen goods from them. 
Addressing media persons at police station Safa Kadal here, sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) MR Gunj SM Shafi said the gang was on prowl in various areas of Srinagar. 
“This gang was on prowl in Srinagar to rob people of valuable items while their soft targets were women and old age persons. People apprehended the gang members and handed over them to police,” the SDPO said.  
Giving details, the SDPO said that on 27 March 2018 a woman from Bagh-i-Nandsingh Chattabal was robbed by two persons when she was returning back home after shopping.
“After stopping the woman, these two gang members robbed her of some gold jewellery which she was putting on.
Besides, two cloth sets for kids, Rs 5,000 which she was carrying was also stolen by this gang,” he said.
He added that after taking the custody of these two robbers, police confiscated the entire stolen items from their possession. 
“The burglars were identified as Altaf Ahmad Sheikh and Shah Rukh Ahmad Sheikh both residents of Dewan Bagh Baramulla,” he said.
The SDPO added that in this connection a case vide first information report (FIR) 33/2018 under sections 392 RPC (Robbery) has been registered at police station Safa Kadal and further investigation are on.
He said that during investigations, it was found that both these burglars were wanted in another earlier case registered vide FIR number 126/2017 in police station Safa Kadal for the offences of robbery and dishonestly receiving stolen property.
“In 2017, two persons robbed an aged woman of jewellery at Chattabal area. In video, the faces of these burglars was identified. With the arrest of these two persons, we re-analysed the video footage again and found they are the same persons. Later during questioning, they also confessed to have committed that crime in 2017,’ he said.  
He said that on the disclosure of the burglars, some stolen property was recovered from a gold shop at Baramulla. “The recovered stolen valuables include two gold garlands, four pairs of gold ear rings, seven gold rings and seven numbers of gold bangles, he added. 
He added that the person who was dishonestly receiving stolen property from this gang was also arrested.
In another case registered under FIR number 21/2018 under section 379 RPC (theft), the SDPO said that four mobile phones were recovered from two accused Shabir Ahmad Gangyal of Rampora Chattabal and Irshad Ahmad Dar of Chana Check Wanigam Tangmarg. He said further investigations are on.  “We assure people that J&K police is at service of public and will ensure their protection,” he added. Meanwhile, locals have hailed the police action.
