Group of lawyers assess condition of jail inmates

A group of lawyers today visited Central Jail Srinagar to inquire about the condition of inmates following their recent altercation with forces there.
The group of lawyers was led by advocate Shabir Ahmad Bhat.  “On Friday we had visited the jail and authorities there narrated different story. Today, they gave contradictory statements,” said advocate Bhat.
He refused to elaborate on the issue saying “we are preparing a detailed report which will be submitted before the court.”
Earlier, court of principal sessions judge Srinagar had directed Srinagar central jail authorities to permit and facilitate visit of a group of lawyers to jail. The development had come after advocate NA Ronga filed an application on Friday, praying for directions to jail authorities to allow him to meet the jail inmates.
Bhat claimed that jail inmates are still on protest. “Our visit lasted for just five to seven minutes. We were not allowed to go inside and talk to jail inmates inside barracks. In fact, we were allowed upto visitor’s gallery where four jail inmates were called and they talked to us,” he said.
"Many jail inmates are wounded. The inmates had objected to breaking of barracks at night. Jail inmates told us their all belongings were lying in barracks when jail authorities started dismantling them ” he said quoting inmates.
Bhat said that a group of lawyers was supposed to be led by advocate Ronga. “But he (advocate Ronga) accompanied Mirwaiz Umar Farooq to Delhi and directed me to lead the group.”
Advocate Bhat said detailed report would be presented before court and also shared with media shortly.
