Anjuman-e-Auqaf, the managing body of historic Jamia Masjid at Nowhatta in Downtown Monday accused the ruling dispensation of turning a “blind eye” towards beautification and putting in place necessary arrangements ahead of the holy month of Ramadan.
The Auqaf management alleged that every year government used to invite their members in the review meeting for finalising the arrangements for the fasting month. “But this time, no invitation was extended to us for the meeting,” a member of the management said.
They alleged that no measure has been taken so far to ensure uninterrupted supply of power and water for the worshipers.
The Auqaf members also stated that authorities have not also acted against those who have raised illegal constructions outside Jamia Masjid thereby blocking the view of the mosque.
Devotees also accused authorities of neglecting the Jamia Masjid and not taking measures for sanitation, dismantling illegal structures and removal of encroachments.
The head religious clerk, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, also expressed resentment against authorities’ inaction in this regard.
On Monday, he tweeted: “Held an Auqaf meeting to take stock of preparations for holy month of #Ramadhan .Civil admin totally defunct especially the SMC! Total apathy towards #JamaMasjid and its surroundings, even basic amenities not available! Why such apathy and callousness I ask?”
Anjuman-e-Auqaf Jamia Masjid spokesperson said that chairman Anjuman-e-Auqaf Jamia Masjid Srinagar, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq chaired a meeting of the Anjuman at Jamia Masjid to stake stock of the arrangements in and around the grand masjid, ahead of the Ramadhan.
He said the members during the meeting expressed “great dismay over government’s apathy towards the historic Masjid.”
“There is only propaganda that crores are being spent on the beautification of the Jamia Masjid by the government but the situation on ground is opposite. Instead of completing the work outside the Jamia Masjid undertaken by the authorities, all works have been put on hold for reasons best known to the ruling dispensation,” he said.
Mirwaiz, as per spokesperson, has directed the members and staff to ensure availability of water for ablution and ensure prayer mats are available for every worshiper so that no inconvenience is caused to the devotees in the holy month.
