Snow cleared from 12 km Gagangeer-Sonamarg stretch on Srinagar-Leh highway

The snow clearance operation on 12km Gagangeer-Sonamarg stretch of Srinagar- Leh highway has been completed, border roads organisation (BRO) officials said on Sunday.
They said the operation was kick started by the BRO in the first week of March and has been completed despite inclement weather and heavy accumulation of snow this year.
“The snow clearance operation from Gagangeer upto Sonamarg has been completed. However, there are still apprehensions of snow avalanches en route as the area witnessed more snow this year as compared to previous years,” Captain Shubham Sood of BRO told Greater Kashmir.
He said that any decision to allow traffic on the road has to be taken by the district administration.
Meanwhile, hundreds of tourists intending to visit Sonamarg have to return disappointed from Gagangeer, a village located eight kilometres before Sonamarg.
The authorities have erected barricades on Srinagar-Sonamarg road near Gagengar to stop any traffic movement on the road.
Apart from tourists, hoteliers and other local traders are eagerly waiting for the reopening of the Sonamarg road.
Talking to the Greater Kashmir, Sub divisional magistrate (SDM) Kangan Masarat Hashim said that no decision has been taken regarding the opening of the Sonamarg road yet.
He said the decision will be taken after proper assessment of the road conditions within a week.
