SHRC asks DG prisons to submit report on Hurriyat activist’s arrest

Taking note of a petition, Jammu and Kashmir State Human Rights Commission has issued notices to Director General of Police, Prisons J&K, asking him to submit a report to it about the arrest of a man under Public Safety Act (PSA).
The commission has taken cognizance of the petition moved by rights activist, Muhammad Ahsan Untoo, about the slapping of PSA against the Hurriyat activist Umar Adil Dar, of Lasjan, Srinagar, in the first week of August.
The notice has been issued by JKSHRC member Dilshad Shaheen on Monday. Untoo filed the petition before the commission on September 7, 2018. The SHRC member has asked DG prisons to file a report of the compliance that includes grounds of detention under which Umar Adil Dar has been arrested and lodged in Kahtua jail.
On August 1, 2018, Umar Adil Dar accompanied by Hakim Abdul Rashid visited the office of the Bar Association, Anantnag, with a letter from the separatist leadership regarding the issue of 35-A. He was arrested outside the court premises and within 24 hours slapped with PSA and sent to Kuthua jail. His family was not informed about his arrest and he wasn’t even presented before a court of law. The petition said that in Kathua jail Umar Adil Dar has been lodged with dreaded criminals who pose a big threat to his life. He said that if anything happens to Umar, entire blame will lie on the jail superintendent.
