Shopian shuts on 4th consecutive day against arrests


A complete shutdown was observed on the fourth consecutive day on Monday in Shopian district against arrest of youths. 
All shops, business establishments, government and private offices remain closed in the district while public and private transport was off the roads. Mobile internet service in both Pulwama and Shopian districts remain suspended on the second consecutive day.
Unidentified youths on Sunday evening made announcements on the loudspeakers at various mosques about the consecutive shutdown in the Shopian district until the arrested youths are not released by police.  
Earlier police had arrested many youth from different areas of Shopian during night raids, an official said. “All youth were released except one who was a chronic stone-pelter and has been shifted to central jail,” he added.  
Meanwhile, hundreds of people braving snowfall thronged the residence of slain teenage girl Saima Wani at Aodoo Shopian to express sympathy and solidarity with her family.
Saima (18) was injured during a gunfight between militants and government forces on 24 January at Chaigund hamlet of the district. She was battling for her life in SKIMS Srinagar for nearly 18 days and succumbed to her injuries on Saturday night. With her death, the number of civilians killed in Shopian since 25 January has reached six.
