Karan Nagar sealed, restrictions in Downtown Srinagar as gunfight enters second day

Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in Downtown areas, including Karan Nagar, where a firefight between militants and government forces entered into second day on Tuesday.
An eye witness said that all the entry and exit points of Karan Nagar have been sealed by the police and paramilitary forces and motorists and pedestrians were not allowed to enter the area.
Officials said the move has been taken as there are apprehensions that people may try to disrupt the gunfight.
“We don’t want any civilian causality.  We have taken this as a precautionary measure,” said a higher official from the administration, wishing anonymity.
He, however, said that pedestrian movement is allowed through the area, since the gunfight site is adjacent to SMHS hospital and medical college.
“There is a staff of around 2500 in the SMHS. Besides there are attendants of the patients as well. So, we are allowing them only. Otherwise we would have completely sealed off the area,” he added.
Residents living in the vicinity of the gunfight said that throughout the night there was heavy exchange of fire, and they couldn’t sleep due to loud thuds of the ammunition.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who has been put under house arrest has lashed out at the authorities for putting curbs in the downtown areas.
Mirwaiz took to social networking website, Twitter to send his message across.
