Judicial remand of Aasiya, her aides extended till Sept 27: DeM

A court in Delhi today extended the judicial remand of the incarcerated chairperson of Dukhtaran-e-Mitllat (DeM) Aasiya Andrabi and her two associates, Nahida Nasreen and Sofi Fehmeeda, till September 7, DeM spokesperson Rifat Fatima said in a statement.
“The trio, remanded to 24 day judicial custody last month, was supposed to be taken to court for hearing as the remand ended today. Instead of taking the incarcerated leaders to the court, the jail authorities at Tihar told them that their hearing will be held via video conferencing. Hearing was held at 3 PM today in which the judicial remand was extended till September 7,” Rifat said.
“The incarcerated leaders apprised the lady judge about the ill-treatment being meted out to them inside the Tihar jail. The judge asked the prosecutor to file a report in this regard on August 16. She also took strong note of the intimidation of the women leaders  by the jail authorities,” Rifat said.
The DeM spokesperson said, “These women leaders are being treated as criminals. They are separately put in confinement. Medicines are denied to ailing Asiya while food, which is of the worst quality, is being provided to them in polythene bags. The food is provided food to them through locked iron bar gates and they are not allowed to move out of the solitary confinement. Even medicines prescribed to Asiya are being denied to her.”
Rifat urged the human rights organizations especially Amnesty International to look into the matter and take action in this regard.
She said, “The family of Aasiya Andrabi is completely shattered.  Her children will spend yet another Eid without their parents. It is an ultimate tragedy.”
Rifat also appealed to the people and Imaams to hold special payers for the immediate release and steadfastness of the incarcerated party leadership. GKNN
