Hundreds attend slain cop’s funeral in Kupwara

A pall of gloom descended on Gagal area of Lolab in Kupwara district as the body of slain cop Ghulam Rasool Lone reached his ancestral place here. Hundreds of mourners attended his funeral prayers before he was laid to rest. Lone along with another cop was killed in a militant attack in Pulwama district on Monday night.
People from different areas of Lolab including MLC Lolab Kaiser Jamsheed visited the slain cop’s home to participate in his funeral prayers.  Lone was the youngest among seven siblings, five brothers and two sisters, all of whom are married. His father, Mohd Afzal Lone and mother Raja begam has already passed away.
Lone’s wife, Halima, was inconsolable. People attending Lone’s funeral urged India and Pakistan to engage in concrete dialogue and settle the Kashmir conflict ‘once for all’. “We are losing our loved ones. Heads of both the countries should sit down and resolve this issue with a human heart,” said Bashir Ahmad Chogal, a local resident. Another mourner rued that Kashmir is becoming a place of widows and orphans. “Will this valley have only orphans, widows, and parents who lose their kids? Are we only for mourning? Why don’t they feel our pain,” asked Inayat Lone, another local resident.
According to his family members, Lone had on Monday night called his brother-in-law and told him to keep his kids ready as he would come to meet them on Tuesday morning. “He kept his promise but it was his body that reached us here,” said a family member.
Lone is survived by his wife, Halima begum, two sons, Azhar Rasool, 12, Basit Rasool, 7, and a nine-year-old daughter, Misbah Rasool.
