Coaching centres asked to publicise faculty, fee details within 4 days

Director school education GN Itoo on Wednesday asked proprietors of coaching institutes to make public the details of their faculty and fee structure within four days.
At a meeting with the proprietors, Itoo also asked them not to take classes before 9 am or after 5:30 pm at their centres.
On their part, the proprietors and their representatives told Itoo that the government was “acting like a mute spectator” while unregistered coaching centres were fleecing people.
“All coaching centres registered with the government will abide by government instructions but why are unregistered centres being spared?” asked a coaching centre owner.
The school education department in November issued provisional registration to 182 coaching centres for a period of one year and directed them to abide by government guidelines.
“Most of the coaching centres have not made their faculty and fee structure public which is a gross violation of norms set for them. The department will conduct weekly inspections of all coaching centres to check whether they are abiding by the rules,” Itoo said.
He also reiterated that coaching centres will not be allowed to charge fees from students in one go.
During the meeting, the representatives said while they are bound to provide 10 percent of admissions free of cost to poor students, they should have been granted exemption from the GST. Itoo told them the department will discuss this matter with the government and seek such exemption.
It was learnt that while the proprietors agreed to providing nine square feet space per student, no consensus could be arrived at the pupil teacher ratio.
The coaching centres were directed not to increase tuition fee or change the faculty of the institutes without proper permission from competent authorities.
