Six passengers were killed and 50 others injured when a bus fell into a gorge in village Bidwan of the hilly district Doda on Sunday evening.
The ill-fated bus bearing registration number 5723-JK02G was on way from Doda to Dhada village carrying over 60 people, though vehicle had capacity of 42 seats. The bus skidded off the road and rolled down into the gorge in Bidwan area around 4:00 hours due to alleged negligence of the driver.
The deceased were identified as Shahid Hussain (27) son of Mohammed Shabir Dev of Zehand, Adiba Begum (5) daughter of Mohammed Shaki of Roti-Padrana, Mohinder Singh (49) son of Girdari Lal of Bidwan, Prithvi Raj son of Bid-Lal of Dhara, Ghulam Hussain son of Mohammed Ramzan of Dhara.
Soon after the accident locals, army, police and quick response teams launched rescue and search operation and recovered the bodies from the gorge. The injured were shifted to District Hospital Doda for treatment.
An eyewitness said, “the passenger bus was jam-packed even some of the passengers were set on the top, the driver lost control over the steering and within no time, vehicle roll down into deep gorge.”
Locals alleged that the roads in the area are not good and damaged condition and drivers and controlling authorities are equally responsible for such incidents as they go overloaded without any check.
Superintendent District Hospital, Doda Dr Yakoob Mir confirmed, “six people have been killed and fifty people injured in the road accident, authorities pressed into service chopper and airlifted 10 critically injured passengers to GMC Hospital in Jammu for specialized treatment.”
“We are conducting postmortem of those killed in the accident and their bodies will be handed over to family for last rites.” He added.
