World Kidney Day commemorated at SKIMS


World Kidney Day was commemorated today at Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) today to build awareness about the kidney diseases and their causes, with special focus on women.
This year, World Kidney Day, that is marked on second Thursday of March every year, coincided with International Day for Women (March 8). The occasion was utilised world over, including SKIMS to highlight the kidney diseases risk women face.
To mark the event, department of nephrology SKIMS, organised a seminar in SKIMS auditorium.  Various experts delivered lectures on the theme. These included Prof G H Malik, ex-head of department of nephrology, Dr Muzaffar Maqsood Wani associate professor nephrology, Prof M Saleem Wani head department of Urology, Dr Syed Basina head department of pathology and Dr Rabia from the department of gynecology. 
The audience comprised mainly faculty and students from SKIMS Soura, SKIMS medical college Bemina, SKIMS Nursing College. A good number of employees from various sections of SKIMS also attend the lectures.
Head department of nephrology and organizing chairman of the event, Prof M Ashraf Bhat explained the importance of marking World Kidney Day. He emphasized the need for spreading awareness to the common masses about the proper control of blood pressure and blood sugar. 
“Diabetes and hypertension is the cause of Chronic Kidney Disease in three out of four patients. And it is important that people stop self medicating, which only worsens the scenario,” he said.
 Prof Reyaz Ahmad Untoo, principal SKIMS medical college and Dr Farooq A Jan joint medical Superintendent SKIMS spoke on the measures that can be taken to have better awareness of the kidney problems.
Director SKIMS and ex-officio secretary to government, Dr Omar Javed Shah emphasized the need for correcting the gender disparity in kidney donations where females are mostly seen as kidney donors and less number of females are kidney transplant recipients. He complimented the organizing chairman and organizing secretaries Dr Imtiyaz A Wani and Dr Muzaffar Maqsood Wani for organizing the event. He also praised the kidney transplant team headed by accomplished transplant surgeon Prof M Saleem Wani for successfully running the SKIMS Kidney Transplant programme.  
Prof M Saleem Wani highlighted the urological aspects in kidney transplantation.
The event concluded with a panel discussion where experts replied to questions from audience. The panel comprised Dr Imtiyaz A Wani, Dr M Ashraf Bhat, Dr G H Malik, Dr M Saleem Wani and Dr M Saleem Najar.
