Sub-district hospital Chrar: A hospital without doctors

The sub-district hospital Chrar i Sharif in Budgam district is yet to get the vacant posts of medical officers and specialist doctors filled, compromising the patient-care in this key healthcare institution of Central Kashmir.
As many as 12 posts of medical officer and six posts of specialist doctor are vacant in the hospital. The posts include basic ones like that of gynecologist, ophthalmologist, surgeon, orthopedic and general physician.
The lackadaisical approach in filling these posts leaves the inhabitants of the area in lurch.
The locals blame authorities for having shifted physicians and the lone gynecologist from the hospital, when at least six doctors were supposed to look after patients on daily basis.
When this reporter visited the hospital on Thursday, Ishtiyaq Ahmad, a local resident, said, “Me and my friend have been waiting for ENT doctor since morning. The absence of doctors here compels us to visit Srinagar hospitals.”
A medical officer posted in the hospital rued, “There is no proper roster and only six doctors have to work every day throughout the week. Administration should act by filling the vacant posts.”
Locals informed Greater Kashmir that a doctor running the ultra sound machine was transferred on 28th August last year, after which no doctor has been appointed to operate the machine.
Another local resident expressed his concern on social media: “Today I visited sub-district hospital Chrar i Sharif to cure my skin problem. I found that there is no permanent dermatologist in the hospital. There is one working on contract basis but he has no proper schedule. People suffer a lot.”
While contacted, block medical officer Chrar i Sharif Dr Mastoora said, “I accept that there is dearth of doctors. I have been repeatedly communicating to the higher-ups for the same. There are 12 posts lying vacant of medical officers and six posts vacant of specialist doctors.”
Chief medical officer Budgam, Ghulam Muhammad Dar said, “All vacant posts are being filled very soon.”
