Looking after several basic affairs of the local district hospital, particularly the movement of ambulances, a 58-year-old man has become the backbone of the hospital due to his relentless love for work.
Known as the man with the sweet tongue, Som Raj Sharma, son of Sunder Dass, is basically a resident of Dhar Sakri village in Kotranka. He shifted to Seri village in Nowshera almost a decade ago and soon joined a private security agency.
Sharma was posted at the district hospital, which is the main health-care institution in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch, about seven years ago and has been working as the security officer ever since.
Besides handling the security of the hospital, presently, Sharma also looks after some other important affairs, including the ambulance movement section.
While talking about Sharma’s work, an official of the hospital posted in the Emergency wing Aijaz Ahmed said, “The entire movement of ambulances and ferrying of patients is managed by Sharma. He heads the incident response section of the hospital, which is aimed to rush teams and ambulances in case of any mishaps.”
"Sharma, a dedicated man, lives in a small cabin of the hospital and works day and night. He picks up calls for ambulance request even post midnight and responds to the requirement without any delay,” Ahmed further said.
While praising Sharma for his honesty, dedication and love for work, Dr Javaid said, “He knows every staff member, acts swiftly during need, responds to all kind of situations, manages private security cover and movement of ambulances as per need. He even does a lot of basic works for which he is not paid. These are out of his job description, but Sharma loves to help in whichever way he can.”
Sharma is a man who performs multiple roles in the hospital and everyone is always looking for him. He goes out of his way to help people, be it doctors, officials, patients or the attendants. "Each and every staff member of the hospital recognizes Sharma’s approach and he is the backbone of the hospital,” a senior health officer, who earlier served as Medical Superintendent of the DH said.
While talking to Greater Kashmir, Medical Superintendent Dr Mehmood Bajjar also had only praises for Sharma. He said, “Running a hospital requires team work. Everyone needs to be in cohesion to deliver proper health-care services, but Sharma is in a league of his own. He is the go to person. From handling security to administration, if needed, he does it all. The hospital has a lot of burden as not only the people from Rajouri, but from Poonch, Reasi, Mahore and other parts of the Pir Panchal region come here for treatment, but Sharma eases the burden of all of us.”
Dr Bajjar further said, “Not only the staff, but the local populace also loves and respects him. At a time when most people are looking at retirement, Sharma has the energy of a teenager. He is working all the time, 24*7.”
While taking to Greater Kashmir, Som Raj Sharma said that he is trying to perform his work in a dedicated and devoted manner. "I just want to perform my work to the best of my abilities. I am paid and I want to earn it. I want my conscience clear,” he said.
Sharma avails leave for two or three days a month, but for the rest 27-28 days, he works day and night.
"Even on the days when I am on leave, people call me for ambulance service and I respond," he said.
