Pattan hospital dev funds spent on workers’ salaries

Monthly salaries of more than 130 Hospital Development Fund Workers at Sub District Hospital, Pattan, have been paid from the fund meant for the development of the hospital. Every month the hospital draws some four lakh rupees from the fund to pay the workers who have been hired since 2010 on recommendation of legislators.
The monthly honorarium of these workers is in the region of 1500 to 4500, depending upon a worker’s political backing. Most of the workers, an official said, never visit the hospital and are paid monthly honorarium while sitting at home or doing some other job.
“Majority of these workers never visit the hospital and are doing other jobs. Several drivers who are drawing monthly honorarium from the HDF are running their private passenger vehicles and some are working in private nursing homes,” said Basharat Ahmad, a local resident.
Regretting the use of hospital funds for paying salaries of workers, a doctor, who didn’t want to be named, said: “The hospital development fund is generated from selling patient tickets or conducting different tests at the hospital and thereafter the same amount is being used to procure medicine for the poor patients or for repairing hospital equipment or is being used during some eventuality,” he said.
