Karnah faces shortage of doctors

The residents of Karnah in frontier Kupwara district on Friday appealed authorities to deploy adequate doctors as the shortage has created crisis in their area.
The villagers said estimated population 61000 in their area is made to suffer due to unavailability of doctors at the Karnah Sub District Hospital and eight Primary Health Centers (PHCs).
Records show that only eight doctors have been posted in Karnah local hospital and PHCs against available vacancy of 27 doctors.
“In absence of proper health care, patients are often referred to other hospitals in Kupwara and Srinagar. Most of the times we have seen that patients die enroute before reaching these hospitals,” said Ashiq Hussain from Tangdar.
Block Medical Officer (BMO) Tanghdar Dr Muhammad Yousuf said they have shortage of 19 doctors. “The existing staff is already overburdened. They (staff) find it tough to deal with the patient surge,” he said.
