‘Hajam was received at SMHS hospital in critical condition’

Medical records of Feroz Ahmed Hajam, 24, a resident of Laroo, Kokernag in Anantnag district, submitted by HoD Medicine, SMHS Hospital, Srinagar, before the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) state that the hospital had received Hajam “in a very critical condition with his throat-cut badly”.
Reports filed by Government Medical College (GMC) and SKIMS Soura also state that there were multiple bruises on the right arm of the person and his thighs were also wounded.
A petition before the SHRC was filed by rights activist Muhammad Ahsan Untoo in this regard on September 17, 2018.
While the detailed police report is still awaited, the petitioner argued that Hajam was “tortured by the forces” as he was summoned to a nearby army camp where he was allegedly ruthlessly beaten and left with his “throat cut”.
The petitioner demanded a high level probe into the incident urging the SHRC investigating wing to probe the entire incident.
Police had maintained that Hajam tried to end his life, “by slitting his throat”.
“He is a Jaish suspect and was apprehended in connection with a case,” a police statement had said.
“During questioning he went to attend nature’s call and tried to end his life by slitting his throat,” it had said.
Hajam, according to the petitioner, was referred to Anantnag district hospital from the 19 RR camp in Nadoora village in Dooru area of the district.
