Free Cataract surgery camp going on in Langate, 110 operated free

Many outside Langate residents availed the facility, BMO asks more to benefit.

The people of North Kashmir have hailed the efforts of Block Medical Officer (BMO) Langate Dr. Nazir Ahmad for organizing a mega cataract surgery camp which is going on at Sub District Hospital (SDH) Langate since 3rd of May. People have thanked the Directorate of Health Services Kashmir in general and BMO Langate in particular for such a facility in a far-flung area and said that such a health facility have been provided to them for the first time.

A number of people hailing not only from Langate area but from adjoining north Kashmir areas, like Sopore, Rafiabad, Kupwarah, Baramulla etc, said that they visited the SDH Langate where they were examined by experienced ophthalmologists and advised the treatment and even many of them underwent cataract surgeries free of charges. “We are satisfied by the services that have been made available in the camp” Farooq Ahmad, an attendant whose elderly father underwent cataract surgery in the camp said.

A free cataract surgery camp was organized by BMO Langate in collaboration with Directorate of health services Kashmir & CMO Kupwara under “Control of blindness” scheme. The camp, that was inaugurated by the concerned MLA, Er Rasheed in presence of BMO Dr. Nazir, other officers and respected citizens on 3rd May, examines the patients suffering from eye ailments and registers them for instant cataract surgeries if needed. BMO Langate Dr. Nazir while thanking the director general Dr. Saleem ur Rahman for his support said that it is the first of its kind facility provided to the people of this far-flung area.

Dr. Nazir further said that it is a step to improve the quality of life of the old and infirm senior citizens, who, after the surgery and lenses implant, will be able to lead an independent life. He said that “110 senior citizens from underprivileged remote areas underwent the free cataract surgery with use of latest state of art equipment for implantation of intraocular lenses till now”. Dr. Nazir added that many people even from outside the jurisdiction of medical block Langate have availed the facility and were satisfied enough after the surgery and allied treatment. He said that the camp will continue for some more time and they want more and more patients to come and avail the opportunity.
